Introducing Berlin -
The City
Berlin is best known for its historical associations as the German capital, and offers a wealth of cultural opportunities from its numerous museums, art galleries which are regarded as some of the best in Europe, palaces, and other sites of historic interest. Berlin's architecture is quite varied. Despite being heavily damaged by Allied bombers in WWII, Berlin has returned to its old self, with many of the damaged buildings now restored to their former glory, including the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche, the famous church destroyed in 1943. Berlin is at the forefront of late 20th Century architecture, especially in the Potsdamer Platz. And for those with a curiosity about the former Eastern bloc part of Berlin, the Palace of the Republic is a fine example of East Berlin under Soviet rule.
“DRESDEN EXTENSION”
Just two hours away by fast and comfortable train is Dresden, the capital city of the State of Saxony. The city suffered horrendous war damage in 1945 but is now well and truly being restored to her former splendour to become, once again, the “Florence of the Elbe”. The city is renowned for its art treasures and baroque architecture of which the beautiful 18th century Zwinger Palace is a typical example. Two very interesting optional excursions are a visit to the picturesque town of Meissen and its famous porcelain factory, or a scenic River Elbe cruise on one of the “White Fleet” paddle steamers.
