PARIS
Paris conjures up images of romance, glittering nightlife
and gourmet cuisine as well as being rich in culture and
history. Paris is known as 'the City of Lights', a phrase
which this cosmopolitan city lives up to . Stroll along
the River Seine, window shop on the stylish boulevards,
meander through the streets to find that special restaurant,
relax at one of the many café's or take in the many
fabulous sights that Paris has to offer.
PARIS
" I love Paris in the springtime,
I love Paris in the fall,
I love Paris in the winter - when it drizzles,
I love Paris in the summer - when it sizzles.
I love Paris every moment, every moment of the year..."
The immortal words and voice of Ella Fitzgerald echo the
sentiments of many a traveller to this beautiful and intoxicating
city and one of the cultural capitals of Europe.
HISTORY
Paris was known as Lutetia (a Latin word
meaning simply 'Midwater
Dwelling') and got its present name from the Gauls of the
Parisii tribe who established a fishing village on an island
in the river that is the present day Ile de la Cite. The
Romans conquered Paris in 52 BC and although Clovis made
it his seat, Paris did not become the capital of France
until AD 987.
It was Emperor Philippe Auguste (1180-1223) that established
the areas that delineate the political, religious and academic
quarters today. The political and religious institutions
stand on the Ile de la Cite and the trading centre on the
Right Bank. The present reputation that Paris enjoys as
one of the intellectual hubs of Europe was first cultivated
around this time.
