RIGA CITY BREAK
Introducing Riga
Riga is a small city but with a remarkable amount to offer - 50 years of Soviet rule left Riga with some remarkable architectural and historical landmarks completely intact.
Riga, the capital of Latvia, was officially founded in 1201 and was a major Hanseatic trading post. Due to its geographical location on the Baltic Sea (where East and West meets), Riga has been an important centre of trade, finance and culture for centuries. Representatives of many nations have lived and worked in Riga - apart from local Livs and Latvians, Germans, Swedes, Russians and Poles also considered Riga to be their city.
From the 13 th to 15 th centuries, the city saw its medieval centre ruined by war and fire. Trade took off again in the 19 th century, and Riga's newfound wealth was expressed in the form of art nouveau architecture. Today, Riga is a port city with fewer than one million inhabitants, more than half of then are ethnic Russians. Its old town of Vecriga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a medley of fine medieval treasures, only very occasionally interrupted by Soviet eyesore. The surrounding forests provide Riga with another of its treasures, the amber formed from ancient tree sap.
