WARSAW - Sightseeing Highlights

Old Town having suffered heavy war damage, the quarter was reconstructed to its previous splendour, and in 1980 it was listed on the UNESCO World’s Heritage. The Old Town is surrounded by fragments of the old defensive walls with moat and the Barbican. The Old Town Square is lined with narrow, colourful fronts of burgher houses, cafes, restaurants and shops.

St John’s Cathedral claims to be the oldest church in Warsaw. It was completed in the 15th century and was originally a parish church and became a cathedral in 1798. It was destroyed during World War II and restored to its original style. Several Polish kings have been crowned here and it was used for the swearing in of the Sejm (Polish Parliament).

Royal Castle is located on a plateau overlooking the Vistula River. It was built in the 14th Century by the Dukes of Mazovia and expanded when King Zygmunt III Vasa moved the capital to Warsaw. From the early 17th until the late 18th century, this was the seat of the Polish kings. It subsequently housed the parliament and is now a museum displaying tapestries, period furniture, coffin portraits and collections of porcelain and other decorative arts. Totally destroyed in 1944, and reconstructed in the 1970’s. Today it is used as a branch of the National Museum and for ceremonial purposes.

Royal Lazienki Park is regarded as one of most beautiful urban public parks in Warsaw. Notable features in the 74 hectare landscaped gardens are the Palace on the Water was built in the late 18th Century as a summer residence for the last of the polish monarchs, an orangery and amphitheatre as well as the Chopin Monument – where an annual Chopin Festival is held every year.
