4* SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS CRUISES

Anyone that has contemplated the journey north has had to confront a complex geography and the fragmented nature of the transportation system that permits only a limited area of the country to be visited in a reasonable allotted amount of time.  Experience the wonders that the Highlands have to offer on one of the following fantastic cruises aboard the 4* MV Lord of the Glens deluxe vessel.  From 4 to 10 nights, there is something to suit all durations and budgets.

What could be more delightful than to spend four leisurely days cruising and visiting the lovely islands and lochs on Scotland’s western shore.  Of course Glasgow is the obvious starting point for any such exploration of the Scottish scene with its first class connections by air from all parts of the Kingdom (and elsewhere) besides the frequent railway services as well.  Our cruise commencing with the obligatory visit to the rejuvenated city of Glasgow itself & the renowned Burrell Collection.

Embark MV Lord of the Glens close to the Science Museum in the heart of Glasgow.  Evening Captain’s welcome reception and dinner.  Moor overnight.

Day 2)

Sail after breakfast along the length of the river Clyde before entering beautiful Loch Long.  Here using our tender vessel we alight for the short drive for the Loch Lomond cruise.  Later continue our cruise around the Kyle of Bute to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.  Moor overnight.

Day 3)

After breakfast drive to Mount Stuart House & Gardens.  In the afternoon cruise to West Loch Tarbet on Mull of Kintyre for the visit to Crarea Gardens and the ancestral home of the Dukes of ArgyllInvarary Castle.  Moor overnight.

Day 4)

Morning sail up Loch Fyne and thereafter to Lochranza on the Isle of Arran.  Afternoon visit to Brodick Castle and Gardens on Arran’s east coast.  Brodick Bay is delightful and especially so when you lift your eyes from the sea to the mountains above – then you can really appreciate its location.  Later visit the newly opened whisky distillery at Lochranza.  Moor overnight.

Day 5)

Early morning sail to Glasgow – disembarking after breakfast.

May 2009

From £1399 per person!

This sheltered water cruise navigates a westerly course via some of the most interesting and beautiful locations on earth. At each stop there is something to interest the traveller be it beautiful gardens warmed by the Atlantic Drift, historic houses & castles, world renown distilleries, independent explorations on foot and all the while a scenery to take the breath away.

Day 1)

Embark Lord of the Glens at Glasgow.  Evening Captain’s welcome reception & dinner.  Moor Glasgow overnight.

Day 2)

Morning tour of Glasgow and see the renowned Burrell Collection.  After lunch sail along the Clyde to Sandbank on Holy Loch.  Later drive to Benmore Botanical Gardens.  Set in a magnificent mountainside setting on the Cowal PeninsulaBenmore is an enchanting garden steeped in history and surrounded by dramatic scenery.  Benmore’s 120 acres boast over 300 species of Rhododendron; Bhutanese and Chilean plantings and a spectacular avenue of Giant Redwoods.  Moor Sandbank overnight.

Day 3)

At breakfast time sail Loch Long and the Kyles of Bute to Rothesay.  Later drive to Mount Stuart House and Gardens – Mount Stuart’s gardens, are amongst Europe’s finest, and date back to circa 1717 when the 2nd Earl of Bute started to lay out substantial grounds – the beginning of the three hundred acres of wilderness, woodland and designed landscape that can be enjoyed today.  Later his son, the 3rd Earl, a founder of Kew Gardens, considerably expanded on these schemes.  Moor Rothesay overnight.

Day 4)

Morning sail to Tarbet on Mull of Kintyre.  After lunch drive to Inverary Castle and Gardens the ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll.  Moor Tarbet overnight.

Day 5)

Sail Loch Fyne and then southwards to Lochranza on the Isle of Arran.  Later visit the local whisky distillery and Brodick House and Gardens.  The castle is situated on a shelf above the north side of Brodick Bay and under the shadow of Goatfell, which rises behind it.  The location was probably used as a defensive site by the Vikings until they were driven from Arran after 1000.  The original castle was built some time after 1266 for the Stewarts of Menteith.  During the Wars of Independence it was held by the English until retaken by the Scots in 1307.  Moor Lochranza overnight.

Day 6)

Sail in the morning to Troon for the visit to Culzean Castle.  What you see at Culzean Castle today is a result of many years of careful restoration by the National Trust for Scotland that has united the different stages of Culzean’s aesthetic history.  It reflects the different stages of Culzean’s past, from Robert Adam’s additions to the medieval tower house, to its heyday as one of the grandest houses in Scotland.  Moor Troon overnight.

Day 7)

Sail to Helensburgh for the visit to Loch Lomond.  Later sail to Glasgow and journey’s end.  Evening Captain’s farewell reception and dinner.

Day 8)
