Day 1-2 London to Wilderswil
Meeting at London St Pancras depart for Paris, continuing on the TGV to Strasbourg. Spend the night here, enjoying dinner at a local restaurant.
Make the most of a free morning to explore beautiful Strasbourg. La Petite France is a wonderful location for a stroll with all its beautiful buildings. This historic quarter of Strasbourg is divided by the River Ill, through the area that was, in the Middle Ages, the home to Strasbourg's artisans, its tanners, millers and fishermen. This interesting area has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988 largely due to its abundance of half-timbered buildings.
Another must see site is Strasbourg's magnificent cathedral, the Cathedral of our Lady of Strasbourg. This remarkable building is commonly considered to be one of the best examples of high-Gothic architecture in Europe.
This afternoon you continue by rail to Switzerland, arriving into the heart of the Swiss Alps, via Basel, for 5 nights in Wilderswil.
Day 3 Interlaken
Interlaken is the destination for your excursion today. The capital of the beautiful Bernese Oberland is one of the most popular regions in the Swiss Alps, and it's easy to see why. Its scenery showcases all the hallmarks of a picture-postcard Swiss location, with its snow-capped peaks, rolling hillsides, rugged rocky outcrops, and pristine glaciers. The region provides a year-round playground for climbers, walkers, and skiers.
Interlaken resides in the very heart of this captivating landscape, wedged between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun and surrounded by 3 peaks; the Jungfrau, the Eiger, and the Monch Mountains. Because of its location Interlaken is a great starting point for any adventure in the Bernese Oberland.
You are free to explore at your own pace using your included Rail Discoveries Tailormade card for a 50% reduction on fares. Perhaps take a cruise across Lake Thun and experience the spectacular winter scenes.
Day 4-5 Grindelwald
Travel by train to Grindelwald, a pretty Alpine village tucked away at the foot of the north face of the Eiger. Grindelwald is one of Europe's oldest mountain resorts. In the 1920s, as the popularity of skiing rose, so in turn did Gindelwald's. The village itself has an abundance of Swiss charm and is surrounded by open skiing fields in winter. You can explore the area at your own pace before returning to Wilderswil ahead of dinner.
On Day 5 you are free. Perhaps cross the Brunig Pass to Lucerne and discover this pretty lakeside city. Lucerne exudes class, culture, and history, made up by the beautifully preserved medieval architecture which dots the centre of town. Well worth a visit is the 14th-century Chapel Bridge with the impressive Water Tower which rises up from the lake. Both of these are regarded as the most photographed sights in all of Switzerland.
Day 6 The Jungfrau Express
Travel on the Bernese Oberland Railway to Kleine Scheidegg and meet up with the Jungfrau Express* for a sensational journey to Europe's highest railway station, Jungfraujoch, known as the 'Top of Europe' and located 3454 metres above sea level.
The train burrows through the North Face of the Eiger and the tracks emerge on the slopes of the Mönch before climbing to just below the summit of the Jungfrau. The views are awe-inspiring, and you have the opportunity to visit the ice caves and palace, seeing all of the ice sculptures.
Also be sure to spend some time on the Sphinx terrace with its amazing views of the Aletsch Glacier. A magnificent landscape of mountains stretching out against the horizon makes this destination a must see for nature enthusiasts from all corners of the globe.
Day 7 Wilderswil & London
Your time in Switzerland comes to an end as you return to London by train from Interlaken to Lausane. From here you will travel by high-speed TGV to Paris, connecting with the Eurostar to St Pancras.
